The History of the Aaramgah
The only Aaramgah for Zoroastrians in the Middle East region is located in Bahrain. It is located at Plot 373, Avenue 77, Block 705, Tubli.
It was registered in the name of the Bahrain Zoroastrian Anjuman vide Bahrain Gazette notification 704/ 1958 dated 17 Aug 58 referring to Government of Bahrain notification 1191 of 1956.
The wall around the Aaramgah was built in August 1959 at a princely cost of Rs 8,789.71. Due to paucity of funds, as the BZA was operating on a very meager budget, the builder and architect of the wall, Mr. Thadani agreed to build the wall at a no-profit basis. The BZA decided to pay him Rs 500 (5% of the cost of the wall) and gave him a letter of thanks for his services rendered to the Anjuman.
The first major repairs to the Aaramgah wall were carried out by Ali Abdulla Karime & Sons in 1970. At a cost of BD320, the walls were repaired and a two-inch concrete topping embedded with glass shreds was made on top of the wall.
In 2007, a grant was received from a member of the Ruling family of Bahrain for the maintenance of the Aaramgah. The BZA is ever indebted to the Ruling Family of Bahrain for the generous grant and recognition of the Zoroastrians on the island.
Veteran members like Mr. Nozer Mistry and Mr. Tehmten Sherdiwalla have contributed immensely to the maintenance of the Aaramgah, spending long hours and energy towards its upkeep.
During the year 2015, the tombstones of all eight graves were repaired, refurbished and marked with tallies. The external walls were posted marked with signs requesting the public not to throw garbage inside the Aaramgah compound.
